Supermarkets across southeast Queensland will shut today as Cyclone Alfred intensifies, expected to make landfall late Friday or early Saturday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed closures in affected areas, with Coles and Aldi reducing operations. Aldi stores on the Gold Coast closed Wednesday evening, while locations in Brisbane, Redlands, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and the Sunshine Coast will shut from 2 PM Thursday.

Bunnings will stay open for emergency supplies but may close if conditions worsen. Bottle shops remain open in Brisbane, though Dan Murphy’s and BWS stores are shut on the Gold Coast. Pharmacies will operate while safe.

Residents are urged to refuel as service stations will close from Thursday afternoon, with fuel deliveries stopping at 4 PM.

Cyclone Alfred has slowed to 7 km/h, now 285 km east of Brisbane. Experts warn this could worsen its impact, with damage expected to be in the billions. Supermarkets are prioritizing deliveries of essential goods ahead of the storm.
